I posted a little entry earlier today about the war Google waged against PayPerPost bloggers. It seems as though Google just got a list of PPP bloggers and went one by one, zeroing their ranks AFTER the official update was rolled out. I can confirm this with 2 of my blogs going from PR4 to PR0, two weeks after Q3/Q4 2007 update. As a result, PPP’s marketplace suffered a kick in the butt.

PayPerPost’s CEO, Ted Murphy, quickly came up with a solution — since PR is obsolete and no longer represents accurate data for both publishers and advertisers, they are going to develop their own trademark rank, called “RealRank”, based on:

  • 70% - visitors per day
  • 20% - amount of ACTIVE inbound links per day (outgoing clicks)
  • 10% - pageviews per day

…and, PPP’s team are about to give birth to this totally new ranking system at midnight.

What does RealRank mean for us?

Advertisers will be able to choose to limit an opportunity (paid campaign) to bloggers in the top 10%, 20%, 30% and so on of the RealRank ranges. Not sure exactly how will it work since advertisers are not yet familiar with the system yet, which means they can raise the limits for their campaign too high and as a result many bloggers will stay out. I cannot say for sure, we have to wait and see how it goes, but the good thing is, it’s going to be (if I understood correct) a very dynamic rank, updated every 24 hours, not like the 3-months-old PageRank or easily gamed Alexa.

For now, only registered PayPerPost bloggers can install the IZEA Toolkit “ITK” (formerly known as PPP Tools) and see their RealRank in the tools panel. I am sure that with time, once it will develop credibility, it will be possible to check one’s RealRank public, just like Technorati, PR or Alexa or TLA’s Blog Juice.

I am looking forward to see what exactly metric system RealRank will use and how will it represent website’s success and reflect the potential revenue for a blogger, but from advertiser’s viewpoint, it’s obliviously a significantly better parameter than PR and Alexa altogether. So, let’s wait and see…

I see so much about how everyone took a hit from Google. I’m sorry it happened to you. It shouldn’t have happened. I hope you recover soon.

I got hit as well. Pr 3 to PR 2 to PR 0 in four days. Funny thing is I have twice the backlinks and well over double the traffic I had when they moved me to a pr 3 in the first place.

Even with a 0 PR, my traffic is still steadily increasing, and i place #1 in Google and LiveSearch results on more than one topic. They canrank me however they like. but I would like to see RR get more popularity.
