Most of who have got pages of their website stumbled, knows that traffic from Stumble upon has some downsides — it results in very low CTR and comes in a tide that won’t last more than 2 days. Still and all, having your website stumbled allows you to generate very quick exposure and drive thousands of visitors to your website without any promotion before hand. So, let’s see how we can squeeze the maximum out of our SU traffic.

01. Mind Blowing Design.
Average visitor from Stumble upon spends LESS than 10 seconds on the website. They mostly just take a look go further. Unless, something catches their attention. We would assume that unless website’s title really aroused their curiosity, they won’t read but just take a look and leave. We are not trying to be nasty here, but just for the purpose of learning, lets compare these two websites (this and this). If you were to visit for only 5 seconds, which will catch you attention more? Internet is all about the visual entertainment and visual satisfaction. To an average human mind, digesting 1000 words article that is illustrated and laid out against a pleasant color composition, even the illustration is very neutral, is easier than if the article was just same 1000 words in black letters against white naked background. Conclusion: Grab the visitors by the throat with a splendid design.
02. Stumble Only Inner Pages
One of the mistakes many people do is stumbling the front page of your website. When a visitor is stumbling on such pages, he mostly moves on. Stumbling a certain page would mean directly upon arrival the visitor will be introduced to a particular topic, be it a certain game or blog post. When we land on a front page of arcade gaming site we say “oh, another gaming website” and move on. When we land on a page with certain game, we tell ourselves “ok, some people stumbled exactly this game, it must be good, let’s try it!” Conclusion: When stumbling, be specific in both tags and topics.
03. English, please!
Although there are stumblers all over the world, it is estimated that between 45% and 40% of the entire StumbleUpon traffic comes from USA and Canada. This means almost half of the traffic will consist from English speaking only visitors. Hence, submitting a page in German or French, or any other popular language would mean up to 45% of pure traffic loss. Conclusion: Stumble an English version of your website (if you have one) or better off make an effort to have a well written English page before stumbling it.
04. Offer What They Want to See
There are millions of websites out there and there are hundreds of popular tags, you can’t possibly cover all the aspects, while bearing in mind that every website is different and generates different audience. However, some topics are more likely to cover a wider range of people. Humor, ongoing (interesting) News and Web 2.0 are quite popular topics for many, while Videos is a nearly ultimate suggestion as online visitors would rather watch then read, and the chances they will come back for more, bookmark for further viewing or share with a friend are much higher compared to an article. Conclusion: it comes down to entertainment — if you manage to entertain your visitors and offer them what they want to see, you gained a reader.
05. Don’t Show You Are a Nobody
While you don’t have to lie and advertise yourself on the front page, it’s important not to give out any signs of poor status. For instance, FeedBurner cricklet with 1 subscriber will do you no good, just like a PageRank checker sign that shows PR Zero. Always remember that people have this sheeps’ syndrome — wherever the herd goes, they go as well, i.e. in practice it would be — if the site has 10,000 subscribers, means it’s good, if the site has 10 visitors since the beginning of the month, it’s crap. No one would go into a great analysis of when you added the counter and why your ranking are not all that great, they will judge immediately by what they see, so if the first things they notice upon landing are poor status signs — they are likely to move on, and of course it works the other way around. Conclusion: Get rid of any badge or counter on your website that might suggest you are not very popular, yet.
Of course these are only the basics. Content with original concept is your king and queen and land, but I hope it was of use and will help you to generate maximum off your SU hits.
