Now I am back from Czech Republic and thought I would document some of my events there since probably in a year from now I will forget some details and I would not want it to ever be forgotten, though of course we will keep this blog family safe. So…
I landed around 10 AM and by the time I collected my bags and slowly moved out of the gates, it was already 11, I missed both trains that were supposed to take me to Brandys nad Orlici and I had to hurry crazily since in my printed list only one train schedule was left and if I was to miss that one, I would not know how to arrive to my destination. I asked what bus would take me to some metro station and took it, though while driving I had seen that we pass the exit of Prague and signs show arrows to other cities… I could not believe I took a wrong bus and not only it may take me God knows where, but also I will never make it in time. Luckily it was the right bus just going through all the outskirts of the city, but still it was scary.
Made it to the railroad station, but had no clue what platform am I to take! the choice was to either climb up the stairs to each platform (which normally would not be a problem, but not when you have a 15kg bag!) or ask people.. Asking people has two downsides — 1. they do not understand you, 2. they send you down the wrong route. Both of course happened to the lucky me.
1 minute before train was about to leave I finally found it, it was a real action movie.
It took two trains to arrive to Brandys nad Orlici though it could have been worse, eventually it took less than 2 hours until I arrived in a tiny little hole called Brandys, where it appeared to me not much actions happens. Walked approximately 300 meters from the railroad to my 3-stars hotel where an Internet friend of mine has already reserved a room for me. The guy who gave me the keys were extra polite and incredibly nice though he spoiled my mood right away saying they cannot exchange dollars for Czech Krauna, despite the fact on the internet web page it says they do.
I climbed up to my room with some more polite help from his side carrying my bags and just dropped on the bed since I had not slept over 24 hours and started to want it. I calculated how much money do I have and it looked as if I can still afford the hotel and very symbolic food for the next 3 days.
I took the “rest” of the money and went to a local supermarket, which seems to me was also the only one in the entire village to buy me some cosmetics and food. Not only they did not have conditioner for hair from Pantene, they did not have ANY conditioner at all. How women live there? Do they all go 7 km to another town for a small bottle of conditioner? This scared me, since while I kept roaming around the 20 meter square store I also did not find any food I wanted, I just grabbed a few snacks, shampoo and pata, and went back to my hotel.
In the evening I went down to try out the local food, but another disappointment hit me — they did not serve Czech traditional food, even though again, on the web page, they said they do. So, no pork with dumplings for me. Nor they serve the Czech beer I like — Cerny Kozel. Nor they exchange money, nor I can call from them using my phone card. What can I do except compromising on some nice pork slice with vegetables and potatoes (which at least eventually the grumpy me found to be delicious) and sleep? This is exactly what I did, only before sleep I talked once more with my friend, making sure our meeting has not canceled. I was thrilled and scared as after all its “just internet friend” and we were supposed to go with him (total dangerous stranger) and his 2 friends (+2 more total strangers potentially dangerous ) by their car to another city… I told to one of my friends about it and they thought I am totally crazy throwing my trust like this, but I know risk is noble, so I was confident to take it and on this optimistic note dropped to sleep.
I couldn’t sleep (started trying at like 9 pm) so I went down to the bar and drunk beer. To my surprise, at that house the bar was full (of people and cigs smoke) and it was rather merry there. After that, despite the impressive amount of beer I still couldn’t fall asleep properly and suffered from insomnia.
To be continued… (more characters are going to come into picture, I promise!)
